The pomegranate (Latin: Punica granatum) belongs to the loosestrife family and has played an important role in various cultures for thousands of years. Its name “garnet” comes from the Latin word granum, which translates to core, seed or grain. This name reflects the special characteristic of the pomegranate, namely the numerous small seeds that can be found inside the fruit. These juicy, red seeds are not only delicious, but also rich in valuable nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and secondary plant substances (polyphenols). The most important ingredients include ellagitannins such as punicalagin and the metabolites urolithins produced in the intestine.
